Tomkins was dismissed after 68 minutes for use of the elbow but two tries from Josh Charnley put the Warriors on terms. A penalty from Joel's younger brother, Sam, then edged them ahead, although Danny Tickle missed a kick that would have levelled the scores.
No such drama for Huddersfield who crushed Bradford 50-16, with in-form winger Jermaine McGillvary getting two of their tries.
Castleford went back to the top of the table on Saturday night but did not have things all their own way in a 34-24 win over Catalan Dragons.
