Round-up: Hodgson keeps Warrington on top as Bradford slump again
Warrington stayed level with Wigan at the top of Super League with an equally emphatic win at Odsal yesterday. The Wolves beat a desperately poor Bradford by 58-14, Brett Hodgson leading the way with 22 points and Ryan Atkins also contributing two tries.
There was more drama at Wakefield, who led Hull KR for most of the afternoon, 20-6 at one stage, before falling behind in the latter stages. But then Trinity's Josh Griffin grabbed an equalising try and Kieran Hyde kicked a last-minute penalty for a 26-24 win.
The Catalan Dragons made it six games without a defeat with a dramatic 13-12 win over the Super League leaders, Huddersfield, on Saturday evening. The Giants led 12-6 at half-time, with tries from Lee Gilmour and Scott Grix, but the Catalans equalised through Jason Baitieri. It was the former Newcastle Knights scrum-half, Scott Dureau, so influential since he settled in France, who won the game with a late drop-goal.
Salford went some way towards repairing the damage from two heavy Easter defeats by beating Harlequins 34-16 at The Stoop. The 20-year-old winger, Adam Clay, scored two tries on his debut for the City Reds, who are being coached on a caretaker basis by Phil Veivers while they look for the right man to succeed Shaun McRae.
Quins led early through a first try for the club from Mike Burnett, but showed little after that to suggest that they could win for the first time since March.
Also in a slump, although not as long-lasting, are Castleford, who suffered their third defeat in a row, 48-6 by Leeds on Friday night. The Tigers felt hard done-to when they had three tries disallowed, but they finished soundly beaten by a Rhinos side who were lifted by the return of Jamie Peacock, who, like Danny McGuire in the previous match, was making his first appearance of the season, after eight months out recovering from knee surgery.
