RFL investigates bottle-throwing at Castleford

The Rugby League and Castleford are both investigating a flare-up of crowd trouble at The Jungle on Saturday which saw beer bottles thrown onto the pitch. Cas supporters, disgruntled at the failure of the referee, Ian Smith, to refer crucial tries by the Catalan Dragons to the video referee, threw the missiles in the second half and later gathered behind the main stand to protest.

"They felt bitterly disappointed with some of the referee's decisions," said the Tigers' chief executive, Richard Wright, who tried to calm the situation. "However, there is no justification in any circumstances for items to be thrown onto the pitch... If we are able to identify anyone who threw a bottle we will ban them from The Jungle."

The RFL's referees' director, Stuart Cummings, declined to comment on the non-use of the video. The League is also taking no action on reports of drunken behaviour by Hull fans in a supermarket next to the Warrington ground on Sunday.

Tim Smith could be ruled out for the rest of the season after dislocating his shoulder in Wigan's victory at Hull KR on Sunday night. Smith's contract expires at the end of the season and he is expected to return to Australia.

Phil Bailey says he wants to stay at Wigan, despite reports that he is looking for a club in the NRL for next year.

The Bradford full-back, Dave Halley, has switched his international allegiance from Wales, for whom he has qualified through grandparents, to England, for whom he hopes to play in the projected 2013 World Cup.

The 22-year-old full-back or winger has won four caps for Wales, but now wants to play at a higher level with England. Halley said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed playing for Wales but have now set my ambitions on earning selection for my native England.

"The ultimate target, based on an ability to play both full-back and wing, is to represent England in the next World Cup in 2013."

The State of Origin three-quarter, Chris Walker, is reported to be set to leave the Gold Coast Titans for a big offer from a Super League club.
