In 2003, the Reds won this competition and went on to be promoted. Following their relegation last season, they will be hoping that this impressive win will put the finishing touches to their application for a licence in the revamped 2009 Super League.
Doncaster, who were making their first appearance in a cup final, were overwhelmed and could not break down the well-organised Salford defence. There was little Hanley, their coach and a former Great Britain captain, could do to protect his players as Salford's stars ripped them apart with powerful running and dextrous handling. The winger Paul White scored a hat-trick of second-half tries.
