Beckett's try leaves Workington behind the pace

Halifax had to work hard for their Challenge Cup quarter-final place against Workington. The Northern Ford Premiership side were in contention at half-time when they trailed 12-6 and had two tries disallowed, but could not keep up the pace after the break, losing 32-12.

The crucial score came two minutes into the second half when winger Robbie Beckett – who also had a try disallowed in the first half – went in at the corner and Karle Hammond landed his third conversion.

The London Broncos coach, Tony Rea, admitted they made too many errors after his side were dumped out of the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Challenge Cup by Castleford. Ryan Hudson touched down twice in the closing eight minutes at Griffin Park as the Tigers claimed a place in the quarter-finals.

Rea said: "I thought it was 10 out of 10 for effort but mistakes killed us. I don't think we lost control of the game, we simply made mistakes that happen in those conditions. I liked the way we played as a team, I just didn't like the mistakes."

Super League's big guns were kept apart in the draw for the quarter-finals. Favourites Wigan were handed an intriguing derby tie with leading the Northern Ford Premiership club Leigh, while the holders, St Helens, were presented with a trip to Halifax.

Leeds will meet Wakefield at Headingley in another all-Super League tie while Castleford's reward for their 19-6 win at London Broncos was a home draw against Doncaster.
