Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Brendan Powell has an excellent standard-bearer for his Twyford, Hampshire, stable in the shape of Colonel Frank who made all the running to win the Future Stars Chase at Sandown Park yesterday.

A small but highly select turnout featured some classy performers but, despite being sent off the 9-4 favourite, it was Colonel Frank who arguably had most to prove as he took a notable step up in grade.

But the seven-year-old, trained by Grand National winning-jockey Powell, did everything that could have been expected and more, jumping superbly for rider JP McNamara.

Calling Brave, giving the winner 10lb, tried to mount a challenge and loomed upsides on the run to the last but ruined his chance with a blunder.

Powell said: "I suppose we'll have to look at the Gold Cup. We'll stick him in and see what happens because you could be tempted if it was fast ground."
