Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The Good: Roberto Pavoni
His name may sound more San Remo than his native Shenfield, but well done to Pavoni, who became the first swimmer to guarantee a place in the British Olympics squad on Saturday by winning the 400m medley in 4:12.43 at the national trials in London. "I've been dreaming about this ever since we found out in 2005 it was going to be here," the chuffed 20-year-old said. "I live just 20 minutes down the road, I might even stay at home for the Games. It's one stop on the train from my home town to Stratford so you can't get much closer." An enviable commute to have.
The Bad: Jean-Marc Mormeck
The former cruiserweight world champion was way out of his depth against the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, doing his best Audley Harrison impression before being stopped in the fourth round. "I'm not Mike Tyson," Mormeck said before the bout in response to Klitschko's quixotic comparison. "I have neither the explosiveness nor the punch." More Honest Jean than Iron Mike then...
The Odd: E Stirling 6 Peterhead 3
Rooted to the bottom of the Scottish Third Division, East Stirlingshire produced a remarkable performance to defeat Peterhead, surging to a 5-1 lead at half-time. Peterhead pulled it back to 5-3 early in the second half but The Shire held on to win their fourth home game this season in the entertaining match at Ochilview Park. The nine-goal thriller was the highest-scoring game in the Third Division this season.
