NFL Draft: Eric Fisher to Kansas City Chiefs the first offensive tackle picked first for five years, on a disappointing night for British prospects

The first round of the NFL draft took place in New York tonight, with two offensive tackles picked up first and second.

The Kansas City Chiefs took Eric Fisher of Central Michigan with the No. 1 pick while Jacksonville went for Texas A&M's Luke Joeckel with number two.

The last four years have seen quarterbacks take the No. 1 slot: Matthew Stafford, Sam Bradford, Cam Newton and Andrew Luck.

But, as Fisher himself said: "That's a lot of love for the big boys up front, which we usually don't get."

We went on: "This is so surreal. I'm ready to get to work right now.

"I'm ready to start playing some football. I can't process what's going on right now."

Fisher is only the third offensive tackle picked No. 1 overall since the NFL merger in 1970, joining Orlando Pace in 1997 and Jake Long five years ago.

The first seven picks were all linemen: four on offense, three on defense.

And it was a bad night for the UK's three draft prospects, none of whom made it in the first round.

Menelik Watson, from Longsight, in east Manchester, is most likely to be taken in tonight's second round.

Lawrence Okoye who represented Great Britain in the discus at the Olympic Games last summer, has never played a competitive match of American football but the 21-year-old defensive end’s impressive physical attributes have attracted interest from the San Francisco 49ers and the New Orleans Saints.

University of Oklahoma's British linebacker Tom Wort, who moved to the USA seven years ago, missed out but will be hopeful in the remaining rounds.

The Miami Dolphins provided the night's biggest surprise, trading up to take Dion Jordan, the Oregon defensive end, with the third pick, a pick they traded from the Oakland Raiders.
