The South League club were leading Surbiton, of the Premier National League, 2-1 after two well-struck penalty corner goals from Chris Bassano-Harper and, with 20 minutes of the second-half gone, Surbiton were foundering. But Bassano-Harper then gifted a clearance at the top of the circle to Bill Waugh to score the equaliser.
Then Holcombe, who had had a tough league encounter with City of Portsmouth on Saturday while Surbiton had a free day, began to tire.
Their plight was made worse with four temporary suspensions in a final 15 minutes in which Surbiton scored four times, for a 6-2 victory. Waugh collected a second, Ivan Steen scored twice to complete a hat-trick and Matt Daly added to the tally with a penalty corner.
Cannock and Reading made light of the absence of their Great Britain players to register away wins. Reading, with Richard Mantell and Andy Todd each scoring twice, beat Teddington 7-2 and Cannock, with Phil Sully and Andy West each netting twice, beat Chelmsford 8-1.
A golden goal from Roly Ward 11 minutes into extra-time gave Firebrands, who had earlier squandered a two-goal lead, victory in the Westcountry derby, 3-2 against Bristol.
In the women's quarter-finals two late goals from Kate Sharland gave Fyffes Leicester a 3-1 win at Clifton in the only game between Premier League sides. Hightown, defeated finalists in the Indoor Championships on Friday evening, edged out the Division One leaders, Harleston Magpies 3-2, thanks to two goals, from Tina Cullen.
Olton & West Warwick beat Old Loughtonians 5-1 with Liverpool Quilter the last team in today's semi-final draw after their 1-0 home victory against Wimbledon.
