In Dublin, the women took the bronze medal with a powerful display in a 5-1 victory against Scotland. The Netherlands took the gold, winning a penalty shoot-out 6-5 after a 1-1 draw at the end of extra time.

England's men had to settle for fourth place after a fighting performance. A 77th-minute golden goal gave the Dutch a 4-3 win to take the bronze medal.

After the goalkeeper Nick Brothers had conceded a penalty stroke to let the Dutch open the scoring, England were forced to wait until after the interval to get back in the game with two goals from captain Matt Daly.

Although the Dutch again took the lead with seconds of normal time remaining, a Richard Lane penalty-corner conversion forced the game into extra time.

However, just before the end of the first half of extra time, a lapse of concentration from Chris Pryce allowed Roberik Huber to score the winner. In the final, Spain beat Germany 2-1 to take the gold medal.
