Hockey: Early goals end Cannock's hopes of European glory

Cannock and Chelmsford, England's representatives in the European Cup Winners Cup Championships, had to settle for silver in their finals yesterday. Cannock went down 4-2 to Campo Madrid in Lille and Chelmsford were beaten 2-0 by Amsterdam in Cologne.

Cannock were on the back foot after conceding two goals in two minutes by the 10th minute of the tie. Argentina's Jorge Lombi scored the first of his two goals from a penalty corner and German midfielder Nicolas Emmering combined with Lombi to score the second.

Simon Ramsden pulled a goal back but a score just before half-time from Frederic Soyez, at a penalty corner, was a big blow to the Midland side.

Graham Moodie reduced the arrears after the break with a speculative shot from the edge of the circle but the Spanish side won a string of penalty corners and from one of these, in the 65th minute, Lombi converted.

Chelmsford might have been a goal down after just a few minutes in Germany but for a brilliant penalty stroke save by Katie Roberts, but a goal in each half by the Dutch - European Champions 15 times - secured the gold.
