Equestrianism: Stockdale setback
The Great Britain show jumping team suffered yet another setback in the run-up to the World Equestrian Games when Tim Stockdale, who escaped injury from his fall in the British Jumping Derby at Hickstead on Sunday, took another tumble on Monday and sustained a broken collarbone.
The second fall occurred in Belgium, where Stockdale was trying a five-year-old horse. Giving him one last jump over a vertical, the horse tipped up. Stockdale has been advised to take 10 days' rest before he rides again.
Fresh Direct Parcival, with whom Stockdale has been chosen for the World Games, will be ridden by David McPherson at the Gijon Nations Cup show, which begins today. "I bought Parcival from David, so he knows the horse well," Stockdale said.
Amber du Montois, the mount of William Funnell, is out of the reckoning after knocking a tendon in Dublin. Funnell's wife, Pippa, is part of the British three-day event team that was announced yesterday.
GREAT BRITAIN THREE-DAY EVENT TEAM (World Equestrian Games, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, 10-22 September): J Brakewell (Over to You), W Fox-Pitt (Tamarillo), P Funnell (Supreme Rock), L Law (Shear H20). Individuals: K Cook (Captain Christy), P Stockton (Eye Spy II).
