Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Tote Jackpot may prove an irresistible lure for punters today as finding the six winners at Brighton will secure them a portion of a pool that is expected to be worth more than £1m. Some stunning results at Bath yesterday produced a rollover of £621,255 to Brighton and the pool is expected to be in the five highest of all time.

Punters got off to a bad start yesterday when the 25-1 chance Montev Lady romped home in the opener, paying £218.90 to a £1 stake on the Tote's win pool. That ruled out 99.7 per cent of the £367,756 staked yesterday, leaving only £1,054.13 to roll on to the second race. Goldie's 16-1 victory in that event left only £6.55 running on to the third leg and interest ended after the fourth leg when Shaanxi Romance, carrying the last 18p still running, finished only third.

The Tote's spokesman, Rob Hartnett, said: "If it isn't won at Brighton then we could see the pool approaching the highest ever, which was more than £2m at Exeter in 1995."
