Basketball: Jets turn to experience of Gardner
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Chester Jets begin their defence of the National Cup against Scottish Rocks in Glasgow tonight, with their hopes resting on the 38-year-old former international, Dave Gardner, a temporary replacement for the absent American John McCord.
McCord is in New York as best man at his brother's wedding, forcing coach Robbie Peers to ask Gardner, a 6ft 8in police inspector, to 'de-retire' for the weekend. "Dave knows what's expected and he brings valuable veteran leadership," Peers said.
There are two other all-BBL clashes with three-times winners Sheffield Sharks at home to Newcastle Eagles tonight. Both clubs opened the season with two BBL wins last weekend. Milton Keynes Lions are at home to London Towers in a delayed tie being played two weeks tomorrow.
Essex Leopards booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 102-73 win at National League Conference side Kingston Wildcats on Thursday night.
