Joachin Low will remain Germany coach despite his side’s 6-0 defeat by Spain in their last outing, the Deutscher Fussball Bund confirmed on Monday.

The manner of Die Mannschaft’s Nations League defeat led many fans to suggest Low’s tenure as head coach was over, but national team director Oliver Bierhoff offered his support in the wake of that result.

And now the DFB in its entirety has backed Low to stay on.

A statement released on Monday read: “The DFB committee unanimously decided in a telephone conference on Monday to proceed uninhibited with the plan agreed in March 2019 to refresh the national team under Joachim Low

“On Monday morning, president Fritz Keller, vice presidents Rainer Koch and Peter Peters and treasurer Stephan Osonabrugge met with Oliver Bierhoff and Joachim Low in Frankfurt am Main.

“It was important to the head coach to discuss the defeat by Spain and the remaining months before Euro 2021 in an open, constructive and thorough conversation.

“Joachim Low informed his fellow attendees of his assessments of the situation, of his ideas and his future plans.

“The committee members unanimously agreed that their decision was based on the high quality of the coaching team’s work, the strong relationship between coaches and players, as well as a clear idea of their process up to now and going forward.

“No single game can – nor should it – be the measuring stick for the fundamental success of the national team or its coach.”

Low guided Germany to the World Cup trophy in 2014, but his side were eliminated in the group stage in 2018.

Following that premature exit, Low sought to refresh his squad, controversially dropping Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller and Jerome Boateng.
