World Cup 2018: Manuel Neuer vows to fight on after Germany 'screwed up'

The reigning champions tumbled out of the tournament at the group stage for the first time in 80 years

Manuel Neuer has admitted Germany "screwed up together" but won't walk away from the national team following their disastrous early exit from the World Cup.

The reigning champions tumbled out of the tournament at the group stage for the first time in 80 years with defeat to South Korea on Wednesday the final straw of a calamitous campaign.

The result has seen widespread criticism back home in Germany as well as derision from fans of other countries across the globe.

And Neuer, who received plenty of personal criticism after being caught out in the final moments of the defeat in Kazan, admits his side weren't anywhere near good enough to progress.

"You have to say we do not deserve (to go through), " he said. "In the second round everybody would have liked to play against us. How are we going to be dangerous to an opponent if we do not get our performance (right)?

"We gave a bad picture in the three games. I can not answer why that happened. We have to take responsibility. We screwed up, (and) we screwed up together."

Asked whether he felt he had a future with the national side, Neuer replied: "I do not intend to stop."

Korea's second goal came with Neuer completely out of position on the wing, as Germany desperately sought the goals to turn the match around in the favour.

But the 32-year-old defended his decision to leave his regular post.

"I mean, we had (played) 96 minutes, we were 1-0 down. We still believed then. The mistake must be put down to me," he added.
