World Cup 2018: Raheem Sterling misses England training due to private matter

Sterling has missed the first two days of Gareth Southgate's training camp and will instead join up with the England group on Tuesday evening

Raheem Sterling has yet to meet up with England after the Manchester City forward was given special dispensation due to a private matter.

After Gareth Southgate last week revealed his 23-man World Cup squad, the majority linked up at St George’s Park this week to step up preparations for the tournament in Russia.

However, Sterling has missed the first two days of camp due to a private matter and will instead join up with the group on Tuesday evening.

Manchester United and Chelsea players have also not arrived after being given an extended break following the FA Cup final, with Liverpool’s England players also set to get some time off after Saturday’s Champions League final.

Those players, along with Sterling, were the only ones missing from camp at St George’s Park on Tuesday morning, when Harry Kane trained for the first time since being named England captain for the World Cup.

John Stones and Kyle Walker worked inside on an individual training regime, while standby players James Tarkowski and Jake Livermore took part in the main session.

Chelsea teenager Mason Mount joined England training again having impressed on loan at Vitesse Arnhem.

Watford’s Nathaniel Chalobah continues his rehabilitation from a serious knee injury with the group, while Angus Gunn, the Manchester City goalkeeper who impressed on loan at Norwich, is also with them.

Gunn will be replaced in the training squad by standby goalkeeper Tom Heaton next week.

Fellow back-up players Lewis Cook and Adam Lallana are away with the England Under-21s and Liverpool respectively.
