Who scored in England's last-16 penalty shootout against Colombia?

England defied the ghosts of their recent past to win a penalty shootout at the World Cup for the first time in their history, thus booking their place in the quarter-finals of Russia 2018.

The Three Lions looked on course for yet another early exit at the World Cup after Colombia took the game to penalties, having drawn level in the dying minutes of the match following Harry Kane’s 57-minute opener.

The 30 minutes of extra time made for a tense and cagey affair as Colombia, who up until their equaliser had looked the inferior side, pushed a nervous-looking England to the edge.

But the Three Lions held on, even coming close to finding the winner in extra time through an Eric Dier header, with the game going to penalties.

England had never previously won a penalty shootout at the World Cup, having lost all three shootouts they were involved in prior to tonight’s events, but Gareth Southgate’s men rewrote the history books in Moscow as they beat their South American opponents 4-3 from the spot.

Kane and Marcus Rashford scored England’s first two penalties before Jordan Henderson’s effort was saved.

Colombia went on to hit the bar at which point Kieran Trippier stepped up to find the back of the net, taking the score level at 3-3.

Jordan Pickford then denied Colombia’s fourth effort, with Dier hitting the winning penalty to secure England’s first knockout victory at a World Cup since 2006.
