From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Iceland defied all expectations in their first ever World Cup finals match, holding Argentina to a hard-fought 1-1 draw in Moscow.

Argentina opened the scoring through Sergio Aguero, who hit his first goal at a World Cup, but they were immediately pegged back after some haphazard defending gifted Alfreo Finnbogason with a golden opportunity.

If the first half showed Argentina’s flaws in defence, the second half exposed their attacking vulnerabilities as they failed to really probe the Iceland rear-guard until Maximiliano Meza won a penalty.

But Lionel Messi showed he is human after all, missing from the spot, and even though they could easily have won another penalty after substitute Pavon was fouled, Iceland were more than deserving of their point this afternoon.

Both sides will know that navigating their way past Nigeria and Croatia will prove a difficult task and this group of death is already living up to its billing.
