Of Turkish descent, Can was born in Frankfurt on 12 January 1994. He began his professional career at Bayern Munich after playing for Eintracht Frankfurt at youth level, and broke into Bayern first-team during the 2012/13 season, when he made four Bundesliga appearances.
Can then moved to Bayer Leverkusen last August for £4m, and the defensive midfielder an integral part of Sami Hyypia's team last season, making 29 Bundesliga appearances and scoring three goals.

At international level, Can has played for Germany at Under-15, U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 level. He captained the team in the U-17 World Cup in 2011.
As he has not yet played a full international for Germany, Can is still eligible to play for Turkey because of his ancestry. He has, however, previously gone on record to say that he hopes to play his international football for Germany.
