Watford have signed out-of-contract striker Danny Welbeck in the wake of his departure from Arsenal following five years at the Emirates.

Welbeck, 28, spent the majority of his time at Arsenal on the fringes through injury, and his strong start to last season was curtailed by a broken ankle suffered in the Europa League.

Watford believe they can see the best of the England international, who has 16 goals in 42 caps, if they can keep him fit.

Welbeck will compete against a raft of attacking players including captain Troy Deeney, Spanish forward Gerard Deulofeu and the former Burnley striker Andre Gray.

The club are hopeful of keeping hold of midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure as the transfer deadline draws near, despite strong interest from Everton.
