Victor Valdes has thanked his fans for supporting him through his recovery from a serious knee injury as he moves closer to a return to football, and he could be about to join Manchester United as a result.

Valdes is currently training with the Premier League club given that he remains a free agent after leaving Barcelona in the summer. The goalkeeper saw his career with the Spanish side come to a sad and abrupt end when he suffered damage to his anterior cruciate ligament which required surgery in March.

Having failed a medical to join Monaco in the summer, Valdes has been training with the Red Devils and the belief is that he could join on a free transfer if he proves his fitness to manager Louis van Gaal.

Valdes tweeted on Sunday night: “Great training session Today. Almost Ready! Thanks for your supportive messages throughout these months. They have helped me a lot!”

Should Valdes join United at some point this season, he would likely provide back up to his compatriot David de Gea, as he is highly unlikely to replace the new Spanish No 1. De Gea has been one of the few shining lights at United over the last 18 months, and his form appears to be getting better and better even if United still find themselves with serious problems in defence.

He recently ousted Iker Casillas in Vicente del Bosque’s starting line-up for the national team, although his performances have linked him with a £30m move to Real Madrid in the near future.

Valdes would be ahead of current No 2 Anders Lindegaard, who is not expected to remain at the club beyond the end of the season.
