Troy Deeney signs new five-year contract at Watford to end Leicester City interest after £25m bid

Deeney scored 15 goals to help the Hornets consolidate themselves in the Premier League

Troy Deeney has signed a new five-year contract at Watford following a succession of transfer bids, the highest of which being in the region of £25m, from Leicester City.

The Premier League champions have courted the 28-year-old for some time and stepped up their interest this summer as they plan for their maiden campaign in the Champions League.

Confirming the news on Watford’s official website on Friday afternoon, Deeney said: “This club really means business and I want to be part of this. I’ve listened carefully to everything the club has had to say to me recently.

“We’ve talked things through in a sensible way – and it’s helped me fully deal with lots of my own thoughts. When you’re right in the middle of something, maybe you take it for granted how quickly things are moving forward.

“I don’t think I’ve done that; but by talking it over it’s clear that Watford isn’t ever going to settle for second-best – and that’s how I want to feel about my career so it works for me.”

Watford have no desire to allow Deeney to leave Vicarage Road considering it would mean paying former club Walsall 25 per cent of any profit over the £500,000 they bought the forward for in 2010.

Deeney scored 15 goals to help the Hornets consolidate themselves in the Premier League last season following promotion from the Championship the previous campaign.

Soon after the announcement, he said on Twitter: “Pleased to have signed my new deal massive thanks to everybody @WatfordFC for the continued support now time to work.”
