City keep an eye on Wolfsburg's Dzeko
Manchester City are making provisions for some of their high-profile striking transfer market targets not coming to fruition, with the Wolfsburg forward Edin Dzeko among those they are watching as possible back-ups.
City have had the 23-year-old Bosnia international under observation this season, during a campaign in which he scored 30 times in 33 appearances for the German champions and was named Germany's footballer of the year. Wolfsburg paid around £3m for Dzeko and would be seeking £9m for him.
The player fits the bill for the kind of combative, physical forward City have lacked. He is 6ft 3in and contributed 10 assists in a successful partnership with the 30-year-old Brazilian Grafite last season.
Though City are resigned to losing Daniel Sturridge, whose £65,000 wage demand is well in excess of what City are willing to offer, the conversation about the striker between the Chelsea chief executive, Peter Kenyon, and his City opposite number, Garry Cook, has not yielded a firm bid for the player.
Diego Forlan's agent has rejected suggestions of a City offer to take him from Atletico Madrid.

Reading sign up Rodgers as new manager
The key transfer of the summer can often be getting your hands on the right manager and Reading yesterday plumped for Brendan Rodgers who left Watford to take over at the Madejski. The Royals have agreed to pay compensation to their rivals starting at £500,000, which could rise. The 36-year-old only took charge at Vicarage Road in November but has left to replace Steve Coppell. Rodgers, who still lives in Reading, spent nine years with the club as academy manager before being headhunted by Chelsea's manager Jose Mourinho in 2004 where he worked his way up to reserve team manager.
Adams lands Port Vale role
Another club busy signing up their new manager are Port Vale, who are to unveil Micky Adams this morning. The chairman Bill Bratt revealed Adams, 47, has fought off competition from the former Cheltenham coach John Ward. The experienced Adams has been out of work since leaving League One Brighton by mutual consent in February.

Lyons chase former Gunners
The French club have announced their interest in signing the former Arsenal midfielders Patrick Vieira and Alexander Hleb despite the pair being injury-prone. Vieira has had an injury-ravaged season at Internazionale but wants to play at the next World Cup finals. Hleb rarely strings three games together and spent most of the season on the Barcelona bench.
