Anticipation grew again today in the transfer market as a big name looks set to make an imminent move. It all began with Liverpool's rejection of Arsenal's £40m and £1 bid for Luis Suarez, who featured today in Liverpool's 2 -0 win over Melbourne Victory. The Gunners’ offer, which they hoped would trigger a clause in the Uruguayan's contract, prompted Liverpool's owner John W. Henry to post 'What do you think they're smoking over there at Emirates?' Suarez is now believed to have been allowed to talk with Arsenal.
Ex-Arsenal player Cesc Fabregas has also grabbed the headlines today as he weighs up an option to move to Old Trafford after it emerges that Manchester United have made an improved offer for the Spanish midfielder. This gives Barcelona's new coach, Gerardo Martino, his first headache as he aims to persuade Fabregas to stay in Catalunya.
Tottenham's Gareth Bale, who has been pursued by Spanish giants Real Madrid, looks set to remain in the country. Real have been told that family reasons will keep him from moving abroad. Tottenham may then be safe from European interest in Bale but this could spur further interest in the Welsh winger from Premier League champions Manchester United.
Arsenal have made no secret of their pursuit of Gonzalo Higuain but it has proved futile. Higuain today landed in Napoli ahead of a medical at the Serie A team. He was joined by Jose Reina who is set to sign a one year loan away from Liverpool.
Wayne Rooney has reportedly said that he would ‘be open to a move’ to Arsenal if his deal at Chelsea does not materialise as he looks set to leave Old Trafford before the summer is out.
Spurs have been told that they must meet the €30m (£26m) buy-out clause if they want to sign Valencia's Roberto Saldado. Tottenham's coach, Andre Villas-Boas, today acknowledged that he was interested in the striker during a press conference ahead of their 3-1 loss to Sunderland in Hong Kong.
