Stewart Downing could leave Liverpool for as little as £5m, with Newcastle reportedly monitoring the situation.

The England midfielder has struggled to hold down a place under Brendan Rodgers, and after being left out of Liverpool's last two friendlies, it appears the 29-year-old is surplus to requirements at Anfield.

The former Middlebrough player came close to moving to West Ham earlier this summer, but Downing rejected the move because he didn't want to move to London. A return to the North East could be more palatable.

Should Downing depart for £5m, it would represent a massive loss for Liverpool who paid Aston Villa £18m just two years ago.

Newcastle finally made a breakthrough in the transfer market last night with the season-long loan signing of QPR striker Loic Remy. However, after last season's struggles, more additions will be welcomed by fans.
