Transfer news round-up: Tottenham ready to sell Gareth Bale to Real Madrid; Arsenal set to miss out on Bernard; Chelsea play mind games over Wayne Rooney
We select today's top transfer stories plus bring you a club-by-club guide to the latest rumours
The transfer window is open which means it's that time of year when stories of clubs spending ludicrous sums of money on players you've never heard of is par for the course. Here, we take a look at some of today's more intriguing rumours...
The Gareth Bale saga looks to be reaching a conclusion as head-spinning figures are talked about on both sides of the negotiation table. Rumours of a huge new deal to keep the Welshman at Spurs have since given way to reports of a record-smashing bid from Real Madrid, which has been suggested to include Angel Di Maria and Fabio Coentrao. And it would now appear that Bale and his advisers are tiring of the drawn-out negotiations and, with their hearts set on a move to the Spanish capital, are urging Tottenham to accept a €100m bid.
Having missed out on Gonzalo Higuain, who has just signed for Napoli in a £34.5m move, there could be fresh disappointment for Arsenal as Brazilian target Bernard, a 20-year-old playmaker, is edging closer to a move to Porto. Following advice from compatriot Hulk, Bernard’s father has spoken out in favour of a move to Portugal which means the north London club may miss out again.
Chelsea are prepared to hold off a second bid for Manchester United‘s Wayne Rooney until after the unsettled striker has taken part in Rio Ferdinand’s testimonial match, which sees Sevilla come to Old Trafford on August 9. It has been suggested that the Blues are hoping a hostile reaction from United fans disgruntled with Rooney’s behaviour will strengthen their bid and encourage the 27-year-old to leave his home of nine years for Stamford Bridge.
Newcastle United have withdrawn from negotiations for Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis after seeing an offer of around £7m rejected. The Magpies are determined to strengthen their strikeforce, but owner Mike Ashley is unlikely to agree to the French team’s demands and despite Newcastle’s offer remaining on the table, it is highly doubtful that an agreement will be reached.
A strong finish to last season has seen Chelsea defender David Luiz at the centre of speculation linking him with a move to European champions Bayern Munich, or Spanish heavyweights Barcelona. Having recently signed a new five-year deal, the player would not come cheap, but Jose Mourinho insists that this is merely academic, and the Brazilian is not for sale.
