Newcastle have moved to replace Yohan Cabaye by making an offer for Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier, according to reports.

It is understood that Alan Pardew's side have made a large, undisclosed offer for the 23-year-old Frenchman.

Grenier was one of several players reportedly identified as a contingency plan should Cabaye decide to make a January move, which now appears to be the case.

He has scored 12 goals in 89 appearances for Lyon and manager Remi Garde hopes he can hang onto his player.

While the fee PSG have paid for Cabaye has not been disclosed, Alan Pardew has urged the Newcastle hierarchy to invest a large amount of the money received in finding a replacement.

Newcastle are expected to complete the initial loan signing of Luuk de Jong today.
