From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The transfer window is in wide open and it looks like it's going to be a record-breaking summer.

Kylian Mbappe could make a world record move to Real Madrid while Neymar could break that record again should he complete his own switch to Paris St-Germain.

On these shores the future of Alexis Sanchez remains the biggest talking point in north London and Manchester as Pep Guardiola weighs up continuing his lavish spending this summer, having already exceeded the £200m mark.

With just one year left on his contract, Sanchez is keen to leave Arsenal and The Independent revealed on Monday that he will accept a lower salary from City as opposed to Bayern Munich or Juventus in order to force through a move.

Arsenal are determined not to sell though, with Arsene Wenger holding firm on his intention to keep the Chilean.

Liverpool meanwhile are yet to submit a third bid for RB Leipzig’s Naby Keita while United are pondering moves for at least two more players before the window closes with Ivan Perisic, Eric Dier and Nemanja Matic all being considered by Jose Mourinho.

It is the murmur that has never really gone away, and has come up again after two months, potentially making one of the biggest stories of the summer even bigger.

With Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe expected to go to Real Madrid, it has led to a lot of talk that it may finally see Gareth Bale go to Manchester United.

It has been planned as the summer that Liverpool stepped up a level, but has recently stalled, and is now in danger of suffering a bit of a low.

Jurgen Klopp has wanted to bring in two more mega-deals in Virgil van Dijk and Naby Keita to take the club’s spending up to an unprecedented £200m or so, but there is a real danger that they could lose on both targets and also lose Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona.

It would be like 2014 all over again, when they reached the Champions League but still sold Luis Suarez, only feel even worse precisely because they were supposed to be past this.

Van Dijk told to respect his contract

Virgil van Dijk has been told to “respect” his Southamptoncontract by Nigel Adkins, amid speculation that he could force through a Liverpool move this summer.

Liverpool's hopes of signing the defender were boosted this week by the news that Southampton have left their wantaway skipper out of their squad for the pre-season trip to France.

Van Dijk has told Southampton he wants to leave and there is now a belief on many sides that Liverpool is where the centre-half wants to go.

Chelsea youngster Tomas Kalas has signed a new deal with the club and joined Fulham on a season-long loan.

Antonio Conte has cast doubt on Tottenham Hotspur’s title credentials by claiming that the club have lower expectations than their top-four rivals.

Spurs have finished 5th, 3rd and 2nd in the league under Maurico Pochettino, and will compete in the Champions League for a second successive year next season.

They are also the only Premier League side not to sign any new players so far this summer, something Conte believes is because Tottenham are not under as much pressure to fight for trophies as the other clubs in the top six.
