Despite the news coming on the same day that Manchester United revealed they had rejected a second bid from Chelsea for the striker, the club say the reason for his absence is a shoulder injury.
"He injured his shoulder in the behind-closed-doors game against Real Betis in Saturday and will not be travelling to Sweden," said a United spokesman.
The development will be an embarrassment for United, who billed tomorrow's game against AIK in Stockholm as the match Rooney would return from injury.
The club had released a poster (below) with the words 'BACK - STOCKHOLM 6.8.2013' with a picture of Rooney inside a number 10 - the striker's squad number.
United manager David Moyes said the injury was not serious and expects Rooney to return quickly. United have other matches coming up including Rio Ferdinand's testimonial against Seville on Friday and the Community Shield against Wigan at Wembley on Sunday.
"Wayne hurt his shoulder in a fall during a match on Saturday," Moyes told the club's website. "It's not too serious and I don't expect it to keep him out for too long.
"I'm disappointed he's missing the game because we were keen to get him back involved and ready to play."
The shoulder injury is the latest ailment to hit the Chelsea target, with a hamstring complaint ruling the 27-year-old out of United's tour of the Far East last month.
It was revealed earlier that Chelsea had returned with an improved offer for Rooney, understood to be £25m. United immediately rejected it and remain adamant he will remain at Old Trafford.
The player himself is understood to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, with speculation that the latest bid from the Blues will encourage him to submit an official transfer request.
