According to Milan general manager Ariedo Braida, the club would rather sign the Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o than his teammate Ronaldinho. With Barcelona expected to offload both players as part of a revamp under their new coach Pep Guardiola, Braida said the Cameroon international's characteristics would be more suitable for his team. "We need Ronnie less than Eto'o," he said. "Eto'o is a great player, but it won't be easy because I suspect we'll have to pay a lot of money." Barcelona would reportedly seek €40m (£31.8m) for the 27-year-old Eto'o. Ronaldinho, whose star has fallen this season amid doubts about his temperament, would probably command a lesser fee. Milan have offered £6.3m for the defender Gianluca Zambrotta but Barcelona want £9.5m.

Smith may increase Lafferty offer

Rangers is showing an interest in the Burnley striker Kyle Lafferty. Manager Walter Smith failed with an undisclosed offer three weeks ago but could return with an improved offer for the coveted 20-year-old. The Northern Ireland international, contracted to Burnley until 2010, is 6ft 4in and can play as a conventional target man as well as wide on the left. Celtic offered £2.5m plus their fringe player Derek Riordan in January, a year after a bid of £500,000 was rejected, but that was also knocked back. Fulham had a bigger offer of £4m rejected last August when Lawrie Sanchez, who capped Lafferty for Northern Ireland, was manager at Craven Cottage.

Mendy makes his way to the Cottage

Bernard Mendy has agreed a move back to the Premier League after joining Roy Hodgson's last-day survivors. The attack-minded full-back, who has won three caps for France, has left Paris St-Germain to sign on a free transfer to Fulham. Mendy, 26, who spent a season on loan with Bolton Wanderers five years ago, scored the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 2-1 win against Lens in this season's Coupe de la Ligue final.

Board must splash cash says Howard

Goalkeeper Tim Howard has urged Everton's board to splash out this summer and push for a Champions League place next season. "Nobody wants to say it but I will – the way football is you need money," the 29-year-old American said. "We have had a generous chairman [Bill Kenwright] who has given us money, but we have to keep [breaking our transfer record] to stay up with teams that spend big."

Five players shown door at Bristol City

Following Saturday's defeat against Hull City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley, Bristol City have released five players. Leading goalscorer Darren Byfield, who claimed eight goals last season, striker Enoch Showumni and midfielder Alex Russell head the list of those released. Youngster Martin Slocombe has also been let go and Tamas Vasko's one-year loan deal from Ujpest has expired. But five players – Chris Weale, Scott Murray, Stephen Henderson, Richard Keogh and Jordan Walker – have been offered new deals.
