Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Cristiano Ronaldo has evidently already made up his mind he wants to join Real Madrid but if it is a compelling case for leaving Manchester United that he needs then the uncertainty over the future of assistant manager Carlos Queiroz may yet provide it. Queiroz left the door open to taking over as manager of the Portugal team. "I'm not going to put myself on the market because the decision on the national coach should not be a result of those who make themselves candidates, but a decision based on what the [Portuguese football] federation judges is necessary for the team," he said. "I'm not going to tell you whether or not I'm contacted."
Gomes close to London move
PSV Eindhoven yesterday confirmed Spurs have inquired about the availability of goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes. Gomes asked for a transfer shortly after PSV claimed their 21st league title last season, citing differences with managing director Jan Reker. Reker admitted the London club have been in touch. "Tottenham have informed us of their interest," Reker said in Eindhoven's Dagblad newspaper. Although Reker insisted a deal has yet to be struck, he hinted that it was close after revealing that PSV have drawn up a list of possible replacements.
Silvestre to stay at Old Trafford
Bordeaux have conceded defeat in their bid to sign Mikaël Silvestre.
The Manchester United defender had been strongly linked with a move back to France. But Les Girondins president Jean-Louis Triaud admits the lure of a lucrative testimonial for the 30-year-old has put the brakes on the switch.
Academy to be run by Money
Newcastle have appointed former Walsall manager Richard Money as Academy director.
Money will oversee the development of the club's youngsters. The 52-year-old, who resigned from his job at the Bescot Stadium in April, has previously worked with young players at Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.
Rangers must meet Davis price
Rangers have been warned they must meet Fulham's asking price for Steven Davis if they want the Northern Ireland midfielder at Ibrox next season. The London side have refused to lower their valuation of the former Aston Villa player. They paid Villa around £4m for Davis 12 months ago and are believed to want to recoup their investment in the player who was allowed to join Rangers on a loan basis in January.
