Having brought in three fresh faces, Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho is ready to discard a number of players deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

According to the Daily Record, Juan Mata, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Bastian Schweinsteiger could all be on their way out as the Portuguese manager looks to trim the size of the squad he’s inherited from Louis van Gaal. With a record for keeping his squads small, Mourinho is expected to make space for what he describes as “fundamental” and “supplementary” recruits.

He typically has two players competing for each position in the starting line-up and while he’s expected to face resistance to this approach, with the likes of Mata reportedly proving popular among players, Mourinho often has a habit of getting his own way.

Elsewhere, Chelsea are expected to launch a bid for Portugal and Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Mario. The Portuguese newspaper A Bola quoted his father as saying: “Joao is hurt by Sporting…he thinks he is not sufficiently valued. Sporting say Joao is worth €60m but they pay him like he's a €10m player!”

The Blues are reportedly willing to make a £34m offer for the player who helped guide Portugal to glory at Euro 2016 in Sunday evening’s final.

Manchester City are another club keeping themselves busy as they look to resolve their defensive issues. If the Sun is to be believed, Pep Guardiola has made Atletico Madrid’s rising star Lucas Hernandez a £20m target.

The centre-half has a £20m release clause in his contract and Atletico will be powerless to prevent the 20-year-old from leaving if he chooses to accept City’s offer.

Everton are looking to bolster their ranks under new boss Ronald Koeman. The club are reportedly working on a £25.5m bid for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani, potentially as a replacement to John Stones who could be on his way out from Goodison Park.

According to Italian outlet calciomercato.com, the Toffees have begun discussions with intermediaries over a proposed move for Rugani though Juventus are not keen to sell the 21-year-old.

West Ham co-chairman revealed to BBC 5 Live on Monday night that West Ham “won’t listen to offers under £50m” for Dimitri Payet. The Hammers man was adamant that the club “need to keep their best players” and “don’t welcome any offers” for French Euro 2016 star Payet.

Summer 2016 Transfer Window - Done deals and rumours

Moving to Liverpool, the Merseyside club have dropped their pursuit of Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze, according to reports from the Liverpool Echo. The Reds were vying with Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund for the player’s signature but Jurgen Klopp is understood to be happy with his attacking options after recently signing Southampton’s Sadio Mane for £30m.

Klopp believes Liverpool have sufficient firepower with Daniel Sturridge, Divock Origi and Danny Ings set to be his frontline strikers for the coming season. The club are still holding out for Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski but no progress has been made.

Lastly, Newcastle United have no intention of selling France’s European Championship star Moussa Sissoko unless the price is right, our very own Ian Herbert writes. Manager Rafael Benitez will only consider selling the Frenchman for a fee expected to be worth around £35m.

After impressing at Euro 2016, Sissoko has been linked with a number of sides, including Liverpool, Everton and Tottenhem. However, the 26-year-old has three years left on his contract and the club feel no need to get involved in discussions with him now that the tournament has finished.
