Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Arsenal could move for Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling in the summer.
Arsene Wenger is a known admirer of Smalling, having tried to sign the England defender when he was still at Fulham in 2010; Manchester United beat Arsenal to his signature with a £10million move and Wenger also enquired about Smalling last summer.
With Smalling, 25, out of contract next season, the Daily Mirror reports that Wenger could try and test his resolve again with a £12m bid this summer.
United are keen to tie Smalling to a new contract, however, with the defender impressing Louis van Gaal this season. If it becomes clear Smalling will not sign a new deal, then United could be tempted to cash in rather than risk him leaving for nothing next year.
CECH DOESN'T WANT ANOTHER SEASON AS NO 2
Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech has admitted in the Czech press that he is unlikely to stay another season in west London if he remains the No 2.
With Thibaut Courtois seemingly Jose Mourinho’s first-choice for the foreseeable future, the long-serving Cech appears set for an exit.
“I don’t know what the club’s idea will be. It looks like it works well with me and Thibaut as a duo,” Cech told Czech newspaper Idnes.
“But that can work for one season only. I don’t want another one like this.”
Cech has been linked with moves to Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as Premier League rivals Arsenal.
When asked about a potential move to Madrid he said: “There always will be speculation, I leave it for the summer.
“When a specific offer comes I will consider it. There are offers one cannot turn down.”
Chelsea could ask for £10m for the 32-year-old.
CHELSEA SCOUTING LAZIO HOTSHOT
Mourinho has sent scouts to watch Lazio forward Felipe Anderson, according to the Evening Standard.
The 21-year-old recently signed a new contract in Rome but there is a chance he could leave in the summer, especially if Lazio fail to qualify for the Champions League - they are currently in the Champions League places in third, four points clear of Sampdoria in fourth (only the top three qualift for the competition in Europe).
Anderson has nine goals and six assists in Italy this season and could potentially cost around £30m.
ALDERWEIRELD HINTS AT SPURS MOVE
Southampton's on-loan centre-back Toby Alderweireld has dropped a huge hint that he is interested in a move to Tottenham next season.
The Belgian, on loan at St Mary's from Atletcio Madrid has said he would "like to play" with Jan Vertonghen again.
Southampton have a £6.8m option to buy the 26-year-old in the summer, but Atletico can buy out that clause for £1.5m and sell to the highest bidder - the Spanish club would expect at least £10m for Alderweireld.
Spurs have also agreed a £4.3m fee for Cologne centre-back Kevin Wimmer, although the deal still has to be confirmed.
