From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Your support makes all the difference.Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta has confirmed that his club are monitoring Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen, though he maintains that the Italian giants are yet to table an offer to bring the Dane to the San Siro.
Eriksen joined Spurs from Ajax in 2013 but is out of contract at the end of the season and spoke last summer of his desire for a new challenge.
Some of Europe’s biggest clubs are understood to be weighing up a move for the 27-year-old, who has contributed 69 goals and 89 assists in 301 Spurs appearances.
Real Madrid are linked with a move for Eriksen, as are Spurs’ league rivals Manchester United.
“Eriksen is an excellent player whose contract expires in June and we have had no contact with Tottenham,” Marotta told Sky Italy.
“I still believe that there are many teams interested in him and we have not started any kind of negotiations.”
Inter Milan are enjoying an excellent season under former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, currently topping the Serie A on goal difference.
Former Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku is the league’s second top scorer with 14 goals, but Inter are keen to recruit in this window as they search for a first league title since 2009-10.
“I simply say that he is an important and interesting player. We are looking for a midfielder and a winger,” Marotta added. “We are having several contacts with companies and agents to try to improve this group.”
Eriksen has scored only twice in the league this season, but Spurs manager Jose Mourinho has started the playmaker in the last three matches.
Mourinho refused to be drawn into discussions about Eriksen’s future last month, saying: “The only thing I will tell you about Christian is that I would like him to sign a new contract. Apart from that I’m not going to tell you anything.”
The Portuguese manager’s appointment in November led to Toby Alderweireld – who had only months left on his contract – to sign a new deal keeping him in North London until 2023.
But fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen is yet to follow suit and could leave Spurs for free in the summer alongside Eriksen if the players are not sold in this window.
