Arsenal will have to at least match the British transfer record if they are to snare want-away Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, whose current employers’ rejection of a bid of £40m plus one pound suggests Merseyside minds are being cast back to 2011, when Fernando Torres departed for Chelsea in an unprecedented £50m deal. Liverpool remain hopeful that Suarez will stay at Anfield, but the Gunners received a boost as it emerged that Real Madrid’s interest in the Uruguayan has cooled.
Celtic striker Gary Hooper looked to have completed a move to QPR, but before Harry Redknapp could cement the deal Norwich City crashed the party, matching the London club’s offer, which is believed to be in the region of £5m. It remains to be seen where the 25-year-old will end up, but it appears that the Canaries have the upper hand.
Manchester United’s pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas shows no signs of slowing, despite meeting with a frosty reception in Spain, as manager David Moyes revealed that the Reds’ efforts are ‘ongoing’. Despite repeated statements from sources at all levels of the Catalonian club that Fabregas will not be leaving, a source close to the player suggests that he is now ‘considering his future’.
But on the home front, the new United manager has made no fresh attempt to bring full-back Leighton Baines or versatile midfielder Marouane Fellaini the short distance from former club Everton to Old Trafford. An offer for Baines was made and rejected last month, while Fellaini has also been linked with a move to the Premier League Champions, but Everton boss Roberto Martinez revealed that this is the limit of United’s interest thus far.
In a bid to shed their all-brawn-no-brains image, Stoke City are looking at QPR firebrand Adel Taarabt with a view to securing a loan deal. But Rangers are seeking a permanent split from the mercurial Moroccan midfielder, who has been sent home from their pre-season training camp.
