Liverpool have announced the signing of midfielder Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich in a £25million deal.

The 29-year-old will wear the No. 6 shirt at the Anfield club, so we thought we’d take a look at a select few of the many iconic Reds representatives to have sported the same number on their jersey.

Alan Hansen

The former Scotland international played for Liverpool between 1977 and 1991, making over 400 appearances and winning eight league titles with the club where he was also captain for a spell. The defender also won two FA Cups, four League Cups and three European Cups with the Reds.

Emlyn Hughes

Hughes made almost 500 competitive appearances for the Reds between 1967 and 1979, playing as both a defender and a midfielder, and captaining the club. Four league titles, one FA Cup and two European Cups were his biggest prizes at Anfield.

Phil Thompson

Another defender, Thompson stepped out for Liverpool more than 300 times. In his time at the club, which lasted from 1971 to 1984, the former England international won seven league titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups and three European Cups. He was even caretaker manager for Liverpool for a short time in the early 2000s.

Mark Lawrenson

The former Republic of Ireland international made just shy of 250 appearances for the Reds in a seven-year spell lasting from 1981 to 1988. The defender won the league five times with Liverpool and also claimed one FA Cup, three League Cups and one European Cup.

John Arne Riise

Beloved by Liverpool fans, the former Norway international spent seven years at Anfield from 2001 to 2008. He stepped out for the reds more than 230 times and won the FA Cup, League Cup and Champions League once each.
