Sergio Romero’s wife has criticised Manchester United for not allowing her husband to leave the club before Monday's transfer deadline.

Romero is now United's third-choice goalkeeper following Dean Henderson's return from an impressive two-year loan spell at Sheffield United.

The Argentina international has largely been limited to playing in cup competitions during his United career, though has rarely been trusted to play in finals.

Everton showed interest in taking Romero on loan on Monday but ultimately looked elsewhere and are expected to secure a temporary move for Roma's Robin Olsen.

Eliana Guerico, Romero's wife, has now hit out at the club for failing to ensure that the 33-year-old would be able to play first-team football this season.

"Sergio Romero worked hard for his club. Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him," Guerico wrote on her personal Instagram account.

"He helped the team reach 4 finals / semi-finals and then he left on the bench only to lose them all," she added. "It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go. Respect for once!"

Yet Ole Gunnar Solskjaer dropped Romero last season from his FA Cup and Europa League starting line-ups for semi-finals defeat against Chelsea and Sevilla respectively.

Solskjaer also left Romero out of the two-legged EFL Cup semi-finals against Manchester City, having trusted him throughout the earlier rounds of the tournament.
