Ferdinand announced his retirement at the end of the season after seeing Queens Park Rangers relegated to the Championship, and with the former England captain set to increase his punditry work with BT Sport he’s wasted no time in giving his two-pence about the current state of the transfer market.
One of Ferdinand’s former clubs Manchester United have been linked with a £40m offer for Tottenham striker Kane, while Liverpool are believed to be willing to sell Sterling to Manchester City if they meet their £50m valuation of the England winger.
But in an unprovoked comment on Twitter, Ferdinand labelled the fees a “joke” and added that English players are overpriced when you compare them to the foreign talent currently in the Premier League.
“English players are soooo overpriced right now it's a joke! Kane & sterling have huge potential but 40m & 50m...aguero 38m & sanchez 32m!!!” Ferdinand said on Twitter.
Some users responded to the 36-year-old by questioning his own transfer to Manchester United in 2002 when he became the most expensive British transfer in leaving Leeds for a fee of more than £30m, but Ferdinand claimed that his record before the move proved that the deal was worth it.
“Look at the amount of PL & CL games I had played in before the @manutd move...oh and a world cup! Don't compare me please! There are others,” he added.
