With the January transfer window finally upon us, the speculation has begun to bubble, the intermediaries are firing off WhatsApps, and technical directors across Europe are attempting to plug loose holes while leaving with a profit.

In the Premier League, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Everton are all expected to be busy. Mikel Arteta is scouring for a defender, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a midfielder and Frank Lampard a forward to inherit the void left by Eden Hazard. Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool acted early to secure the signing of RB Salzburg’s Takumi Minamino.

The likes of Serie A and La Liga are expected to be equally busy. Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan in particular are looking to make headway, with Chelsea full-backs Emerson and Marcos Alonso both the subject of interest, and Barcelona veteran Arturo Vidal also being touted. However, the Italian side face losing Lautaro Martinez, one of the continent’s most exciting attackers, with Barcelona and Real Madrid both interested in the Argentine.

The Spanish giants are both currently more concerned by outgoings than incomings, though, as they look to make space for a new generation. Along with Vidal, Ivan Rakitic could leave the Camp Nou, while at Madrid the saga around Gareth Bale is set to continue once again.

As always, the Championship will be busy, with the league’s standout youngsters Jarrod Bowen, Jude Bellingham, Eberechi Eze and Nathan Ferguson all linked with Premier League moves. Here are 40 outstanding players from across Europe who could make a move this January:
