Manchester United fans would rather see Nicolas Otamendi at the club come the end of the transfer window than Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.

The Independent asked readers to vote for who they would rather see Louis van Gaal launch a move for before the 1 September deadline after being linked with both centre-backs in recent weeks.

Ramos has already been subject of a bid in the region of £30m that was rejected by Real, who have since made it clear that the 29-year-old will not be leaving this summer despite the decision having an impact on their own chances of landing David De Gea.

While the pursuit of Ramos has been a rather public one, the interest in Otamendi has remained just that, but with United set to miss out on Ramos they could increase the pursuit of the Valencia defender in the form of an official bid.

Despite Ramos helping Spain to the 2010 World Cup and leading Real’s fightback in the 2013/14 Champions League final, United fans have revealed that they would rather see Otamendi at the club in he near future – just.

With 52% of the vote, Otamendi comes out on top , although the narrow gap between the two suggests that United fans won’t be too displeased with the arrival of Ramos either.
