Jose Mourinho will make Mauro Icardi one of his top targets if he joins Manchester United in the summer, according to reports in Italy.

The former Chelsea manager is odds-on favourite to take over from Louis van Gaal, who suffered one of the worst defeats of his career when the club lost to Norwegian side FC Midtjylland 2-1 in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Corriere dello Sport report that the former Internazionale manager, who won the treble with the club in 2010, will be at the San Siro on Saturday night to watch the Nerazzurri face Sampdoria.

With Inter fifth in Serie A, 12 points behind leaders Juventus, there has been plenty of suggestion that Roberto Mancini will be out of a job in the summer.

Mourinho has been one of the names linked with the post and is said to have met with club president Massimo Moratti.

But the report suggests that Mourinho will not be at the stadium to look at the state of his former team, but to keep an eye on the maverick striker.

The 22-year-old captain has 10 goals in 22 matches for the club this season.

However, digging a little bit further into the rumour and it seems to have been reported by various outlets, although it's not really clear what the first source is.

Corriere dello Sport name The Sun, while the Metro name Calciomercato.
