Manchester United and Torino have confirmed that Italy defender Matteo Darmian has joined United on the same day that the Premier League club agreed a deal to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich.
In what proved to be a very busy day of transfer activity for United, the club completed the expected move for 25-year-old Darmian, and he’ll join up with the club in time to be part of the squad that flies to the United States on Monday for their four-match pre-season tour.
United confirmed the deal on their Twitter account, and revealed that Darmian has agreed a four-year contract with the option to extend the deal by another year.
The Serie A club issued a statement on their website that revealed the move had been completed, and they thanked Darmian for his four years that he spent with the club since he joined from fellow Italian side Palermo.
“Torino Football Club announces that it has sold to Manchester United Matteo Darmian,” the statement, which appeared in Italian, read.
“President Urbano Cairo would like to thank Matteo Darmian for the seriousness, commitment and professionalism demonstrated in these years.”
With Darmian’s move completed, he becomes the second signing of the summer following the arrival of Netherlands forward Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven, but he could be followed by the blockbuster addition of Schweinsteiger after a reported £5.75m fee was agreed with the German league champions.
With United still determined to sign Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid, the club are sending out a serious statement of intent ahead of the new Premier League season, and they could also look to sign Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin despite the imminent move for Schweinsteiger.
Darmian arrives at the club as a likely replacement for Brazil right-back Rafael. The 25-year-old has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford with Turkish side Galatasaray interested in signing the defender, and Darmian’s inclusion on the right flank will free up winger Antonio Valencia to play in his natural midfield position having covered at wing-back last season.
