Paul Pogba’s projected world record transfer to Manchester United could go through as early as Sunday after plans were put in place for the Juventus midfielder to fly to England for a medical and to finalise terms.
The 23-year-old France international has been the subject of a £112m pursuit by United, with manager Jose Mourinho determined to add him as his fourth signing of the summer to complete his transfer business.
Mourinho spoke on Friday to confirm he expects his final transfer target to join the club before United take on Bournemouth next weekend, although it’s unlikely that a deal will be agreed before this Sunday’s Community Shield clash against Leicester City.
Italian newspaper La Stampa though has confirmed that the move is finally ready to move forward with Pogba due back in Italy for pre-season training after an extended summer break, having helped France to the Euro 2016 final.
The Italian newspaper claims though that Pogba will instead fly to Manchester where he will undergo a medical and finalise the terms to complete a move, which could be announced upon United’s return to Manchester on Monday.
Mourinho has made it clear that he wants one more signing, confirming in his press conference on Friday “we have 22 now and we are going to have 23”, but until Pogba is unveiled as a United player, there will still be fears that the move could collapse.
Juventus have been reluctant to allow the talented midfielder depart, leading to United offering the world record transfer fee of £112m – made up of £92m to Juventus and £20m to Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola.
After partying with rapper Drake in New York over the past two days, Pogba is due back in Europe in the next few days, but the Manchester Evening News claims that Mourinho wants Pogba in Manchester in order to complete the deal.
It’s added that United were hoping to announce the deal last Thursday, but an unexpected delay meant that the unveiling had to be postponed.
Pogba has already verbally agreed a £275,000-a-week deal with United that will make him the highest paid player in the Premier League, and it now appears that a completed deal is a matter of when rather than if.
