According to reports, Louis van Gaal sent two scouts to watch the Argentina international in action for Zenit St Petersburg. The centre-back was playing in the Champions League encounter with Bayer Leverkusen in which the Russian side lost 2-0.
Manchester United have been seeking to sure up their defence having failed to adequately do so following the departures of Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra over the summer.
Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo have arrived whilst Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans have been asked to step up. Yet United's defence has been a major cause for concern this term, leading to suggestions Van Gaal will look to invest.
Garay joined Zenit from Benfica in the summer in a £12m move but according to reports that is not putting Manchester United off the possibility of bringing him to Old Trafford in January.
Garay, who played alongside Rojo at the World Cup in Brazil, would continue the influx of Argentinian players at the club, with Angel Di Maria also recently arriving. Manchester United are keen to boost their profile in the South American country, particularly following the departure of Javier Hernandez to Real Madrid, who gave them a financially lucrative presence in Mexico.
