Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been busy this summer adding Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James to his squad ahead of Thursday's deadline.
But he isn't stopping there with a new central midfielder likely to arrive before the window slams shut.
That midfielder could be Eriksen with the Danish international, who previously wasn't interested in the move, now open to a switch to Old Trafford.
It is understood that Real Madrid have cooled their interest with United now the only remaining suitor leaving Tottenham now in an unenviable bargaining position.
Spurs would be looking for in excess of £50m for a player with less than 12 months remaining on his contract.
United's move for Eriksen comes as Tottenham move ahead in the race for Bruno Fernandes.
They have been locked in negotiations for some time as they look to add more new faces this summer.
Fernandes has made his interest in a move to north London clear and has agreed terms on a potential contract.
All that remains to be agreed is the fee with Spurs and Sporting currently £20m apart in their valuation of the player.
The Portuguese club are holding out for what would be a club-record £70m deal.
United's search for a new midfielder is complicated by the future of Paul Pogba.
The Frenchman is desperate to leave the club this summer indicating he wants a "new challenge" with Real Madrid his No 1 choice of next destination.
The Daily Telegraph report that United turned down an offer of £27.6m plus James Rodriguez last week as the club remain adamant he won't be sold.
However, Spanish newspaper Marca report that they are working on a contingency plan with the European transfer window not closing for another three weeks.
That plan involves Lazio's Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who they say could move before the end of this week.
The Serbian international could cost as much as £70m.
To more far-fetched news and a possible loan move for Neymar before Thursday's deadline.
That's according to Sport who say PSG are offering their star man out on a short-term deal.
They say the Brazilian has been offered to United as well as Juventus and Real Madrid.
They are said to be looking for any potential suitor to cover all of Neymar's wages as well as pay a one-off £18.4m fee.
Elsewhere, any move for Sean Longstaff appears to be off.
Solskjaer was suggested to be a big fan of the young Newcastle man but the Magpies' hefty £50m asking price looks set to have put paid to any move in this window.
Despite lots of interest earlier in the summer ESPN report United have now backed away from a deal.
