Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The arrival of Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Manchester United for a cool £50m from Crystal Palace has placed him firmly in the top ten most expensive Old Trafford arrivals of all time.
Wan-Bissaka, who is set to sign a five-year deal worth £80,000-a-week, becomes United’s costliest Englishman ever, overtaking Rio Ferdinand.
Ferdinand, who joined the club for £30m from Leeds in 2002, was also the club’s most expensive defender ever until Wan-Bissaka’s arrival.
Wan-Bissaka will also become the second most expensive Englishman of all time following his move, second only to fellow right-back Kyle Walker’s £53m move to Manchester City from Tottenham in 2017.
The 21-year-old full-back, who won the Crystal Palace player of the season and player’s player gongs last term, now finds himself in esteemed company alongside World Cup winners and Champions League stars.
Manchester United could line-up next season with a back four worth nearly £140m if Wan-Bissaka plays with the likes of Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelöf and Luke Shaw.
They could yet add to their top ten most expensive signings, with £100m moves for the likes of Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho being mooted.
