Louis van Gaal has promised Manchester United supporters that there could be a "surprise" addition to his front-line, but warned that there may be none at all.

The Dutchman has allowed Robin van Persie to join Fenerbahce and opted not to retain Radamel Falcao, who has since joined Chelsea.

It leaves United with only Wayne Rooney as a proven regular goalscorer, with youngster James Wilson and Mexican Javier Hernandez the only other central options. Forward Memphis Depay has also arrived this summer but operates out wide.

Van Gaal has indicated that he is ready to place his faith in Rooney as his centre forward, despite often playing the England captain in midfield last season, and that there could be no new additions to the United attack at all.

"I am not worried about depth of forwards. We still have Rooney. He can play in the striker's position. Last year the media said he had to play there. I listen to the media."

He added: "We also have [Javier] Hernandez, [James] Wilson and maybe a surprise, you never know. It is a process."

That "surprise" could be one of a number of rumoured targets. Edinson Cavani, Robert Lewandowski and Harry Kane have all been linked with moves to Old Trafford this summer.
