Manchester United are considering a number of potential signings this month, and reports suggest that the club are most notably competing with Premier League rivals for Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani and Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti.

United are up against Arsenal and Tottenham in their pursuit of Umtiti, 26, and Barca are keen on getting rid of the centre-back in January if possible, according to El Chiringuito.

Further reports in Spain identify Arsenal as competitors in the race to secure Cavani’s signature, though the frontrunners to secure the Uruguay international’s signature may in fact be La Liga’s Atletico Madrid.

Elsewhere, The Mail has reported that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent scouts to watch Lyon and France striker Moussa Dembele in action on Wednesday evening.

The 23-year-old found the net in his club’s Coupe de la Ligue victory over Stade Brest and impressed throughout.

Solskjaer may look to further boost his team’s firepower with the signing of Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik, 25, according to The Sun.

The Red Devils are also understood to be interested in Hellas Verona defender Marash Kumbulla. The 19-year-old is an Albania international.

But no matter what changes are made on the pitch this month, the biggest difference could be in the dugout come the end of the season.

Former Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri is maintaining his sabbatical until the end of the season, but with an eye on the Old Trafford job, according to The Mail.

Solskjaer has failed to establish any sort of consistency on the pitch since taking over late last season, and that may open the door for Allegri to return to management.
