From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Your support makes all the difference.Luis Suarez has said he would only return to the Premier League to play for his former club Liverpool.
He scored 82 goals in all competitions during his time at Liverpool and netted more than 30 goals during his final season at the club.
He’s since gone on to score 61 goals in just 77 games for Barcelona having joining the Catalonian giants for £75 million in 2014.
But the Uruguaruan striker has admitted that he misses the atmosphere and unpredictability of the Premier League.
Speaking to Jamie Carragher, Suarez said: “In the Premier League you never really know what is going to happen. There is very little between the teams. Here, three or four teams aside, there is a difference with the smaller teams.
“I don’t mean this to sound disrespectful but there are some games where you look at the press and they are asking: ‘Let’s see how many goals Barcelona are going to score today.’
“In the Premier League, you never know what is going to happen and that is something I miss.”
His style of play and prolific goal-scoring record, particularly in his final two seasons, cemented his place as a fan favourite at Anfield. He cites the atmosphere of the legendary stadium as particularly inspiring.
He said: “The support of the people in Anfield was incredible… Sometimes I’d go to Anfield and think: ‘Uff! There’s a game today.’
“You might not be in the best mood or be up for the match - but then I remember we’d go out to warm up and it would totally change my mentality. I’d be thinking to myself: ‘I have got to score two or three today.’ The way the people transmitted that to the players was incredible.”
Given his recent form at the Nou Camp, however, it’s unlikely the forward will be making his return to the Premier League anytime soon.
